　　01. 紅包

　　red envelope (with money inside)

　　"紅包"翻譯為red envelope較為恰當(dāng)。envelope是"信封"的意思，現(xiàn)在的紅包就是一個信封的模樣。如果怕老外不太明白，可以加上with money inside，翻譯為red envelope with money inside就可以了�，F(xiàn)在微信上流行搶紅包，可以翻譯為snatch red envelopes，其中snatch是"搶"，Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary對snatch的解釋是to take hold of something suddenly and roughly，suddenly和roughly很能體現(xiàn)在微信群中搶紅包的那種奮不顧身和喜悅*_*。

　　【例】I got some red envelopes. I've been watching a Chinese New Year special (on a Chinese programme) and I'm having noodles for breakfast!

　　02. 春晚

　　Spring Festival Gala/New Year Gala

　　其中，gala是"綜藝演出"的意思。把春晚說成是一個party是不準(zhǔn)確的，gala是很好的翻譯。和春節(jié)相關(guān)的東西，可以用Spring Festival作定語，也可以用New Year（大寫）作定語，但有些外國人不知道什么是Spring Festival，這個要注意一下。說到春晚，一般都是指央視春晚，有些地方翻譯成the CCTV Spring Festival Gala，個人認(rèn)為這樣不太好，因為CCTV在英語中代表closed-circuit television，也即閉路電視。也就是說，CCTV在英語為母語的人看來，第一反應(yīng)很可能是閉路電視，這樣容易產(chǎn)生誤解。此外，用CCTV的全稱China Central Television也不太好，因為外國人很可能也不太知道China Central Television到底是什么，而翻譯為Chinese state television's Spring Festival Gala就比較好，因為在這里state指"國家的"，足以體現(xiàn)出中央電視臺在中國的地位。

　　【例】CCTV ABBREVIATION FOR closed-circuit television: a system which sends television signals to a limited number of screens, and is often used in shops as protection against thieves:

　　CCTV cameras

　　【例】Celia Hatton went backstage in Beijing to watch the preparations for Chinese state television's Spring Festival Gala.

　　03. 雞年/屬雞

　　the Year of the Rooster/born under Rooster according to the Chinese zodiac

　　先說雞年。中國屬相中的"雞"是比較難翻譯的屬相，因為不知道中國人葫蘆里賣的到底是什么雞*_*。英文中的“雞”很多，我們一起來學(xué)習(xí)一下：

　　chicken 雞；雞肉。這是一個籠統(tǒng)的說法，無論公雞母雞都可以叫chicken，但chicken還有懦夫或怯懦的意思。此外chicken還指雞肉，肯德基叫KFC，就是Kentucky Fried Chicken。

　　chick 小雞；雛雞。這個詞和chicken同源，指孵化出來不久的小雞仔，但chick還有小妞的意思，并且說這個詞的時候帶有對女性的不尊重。

　　hen 母雞。hen和cock/rooster（公雞）對應(yīng)。

　　cock 公雞。在英國英語中，cock指公雞，這個意思美國英語叫rooster。但是，cock還指男性的重要部位*_*，是不能隨便用的，rooster沒有這個意思。

　　綜上，為了體現(xiàn)雄壯、勇敢、充滿希望等意思，雞年的“雞”翻譯為rooster較為恰當(dāng)。

　　以下是12屬相較為常見的翻譯：

　　01. Rat 鼠

　　03. Tiger 虎

　　04. Rabbit 兔

　　05. Dragon 龍

　　06. Snake 蛇

　　07. Horse 馬

　　08. Goat 羊

　　09. Monkey 猴

　　10. Rooster 雞

　　12. Pig 豬

　　再說屬雞。中國的12屬相對應(yīng)于西方的12星座，所以凡是提到屬相，就可以套用星座的說法。因為12星座的名稱首字母是大寫的，所以12屬相的首字母一般也要大寫。除了用zodiac，用horoscope和astrology都可以，都指的是西方的星座。

　　所以，"你屬什么？"可以這樣翻譯：Which sign of the Chinese zodiac were you born under?

　　"我屬雞。"就是：I was born under Rooster according to the Chinese zodiac.

　　【例】'Which sign of the zodiac were you born under?' 'Leo.'

　　【例】She was born under Gemini.

　　04. 年夜飯

　　New Year's Eve dinner

　　用dinner肯定沒錯，但也可用banquet和feast來替換dinner，它們都是"盛宴"的意思，更能體現(xiàn)年夜飯的高大上~。

　　05. 包餃子

　　make dumplings

　　順便說一下，有些地區(qū)包餃子的時候還會放硬幣，據(jù)說咬到的人就會交好運，這種餃子就可以說成dumplings with lucky coins inside，可以和上面的red envelope with money inside一起記。

　　【例】There's traditional food too - noodle soup is supposed to bring luck, and people make dumplings with lucky coins inside.

　　06. 敬酒

　　drink a toast to someone

　　要注意這個短語和to的搭配，如"我給岳父敬酒了。"就是：

　　I drank a toast to my father-in-law.

　　【例】When you drink a toast to someone or something, you drink some wine or another alcoholic drink as a symbolic gesture, in order to show your appreciation of them or to wish them success.

　　07. 壓歲錢

　　lucky money (given to children as a gift)

　　其中g(shù)iven to children as a gift是進(jìn)一步的解釋，為了讓老外徹底明白。

　　08. 年貨

　　New Year goods

　　大家年貨都買了什么？*_*

　　09. 春聯(lián)

　　Spring Festival couplet

　　其中couplet是"對句"的意思，通常指兩行長度一樣并且押韻的詩句。所以，a Spring Festival couplet是指"一副對聯(lián)"，如果指多副，就要用復(fù)數(shù)couplets。

　　【例】a rhyming couplet

　　【例】All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with characters on red paper about a foot long in black or gold ink, giving an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity.

　　10. 團(tuán)圓

　　reunion

　　reunion可以看作由re和union組成，這樣可以方便記憶。以下例句提到了包餃子象征團(tuán)圓，請注意，這個例句說的是in parts of China——中國一部分地區(qū)過年吃餃子，其實我的家鄉(xiāng)貴州過年從來不吃餃子！*_*

　　【例】Every year millions of people travel home to be with their families for the holiday. In parts of China, families make dumplings to symbolise luck and reunion.

　　11. 拜年

　　give one's New Year blessing to/pay a New Year visit to

　　“拜年”其實有兩個意思，一個是把雙手托在胸前說"給您拜年了！"，這句話可以說成：

　　I would like to give my New Year blessing to you.  或  Please accept my New Year blessing.

　　以上的blessing通常用單數(shù)，Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary對blessing的解釋是good wishes。

　　另一個"拜年"是過年期間去別人家送禮做客。如"我明天要去爺爺奶奶家拜年。"就可以翻譯為：

　　I'll be paying a New Year visit to my grandparents tomorrow.

　　12. 廟會

　　temple fair

　　temple是"廟"，fair是"集市"。以下例句說的是北京地壇廟會，我去過，不過人太多了……

　　【例】This morning we went to a ‘temple fair’ at Ditan in downtown Beijing (literally a fair inside a temple grounds).
